Adams was was raised in Castle Rock Colorado, as one of the seven kids who was her smallest. Her father was in U.S. service in Italy. The mid-1990s saw her begin doing professional dance and performance at the Boulder Dinner Theatre in Colorado and Country Dinner Playhouse. Later in Minnesota in a small local theater, she was chosen to be a part of a mock film documentary on beauty contests called Drop Dead Gorgeous. Leigh was found by actress Norma Shearer and signed a contract to work for MGM during the 1940s. Through the years that followed her appearances in many popular films including Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) as well as Living It Up by Martin and Lewis (a 1954 film).
