O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for her performances. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses during the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she was never in the third place ever again. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
