April Lockhart

April Lockhart (born July 4 April, 1995) started her journey in music as a 7th grader when she started guitar and piano lessons. At the age of seven she began to take guitar and piano lessons. This ignited her interest in writing songs. When she was 14 April was devoted for a long period of her time creating song concepts and practicing the music she was playing. Then, she began to take trips across NY and LA with her Dad to help them to write songs. April also included additional topics in her song"Take my Hand. These topics included topics for her friends who dealt issues like peer pressure, and disabilities, or even teenage suicidal thoughts. Lockhart is a partner at popular cosmetics brand Ilia and also is a lifestyle influencer who has a growing fan base. Lockhart was born with no left hand, and it's part of who she is--but this isn't the whole truth. As a result Lockhart's Instagram page isn't afraid to talk about her handicap, however it doesn't center around it as well. What message is it sending? There is more to us than our physical selves. The identities we have are complex and we contain many different aspects. Lockhart has stated on video that she didn't want to be defined solely by her disability. She doesn't wish to become a disability advocate who only talks about disability. There are many aspects of Lockhart. It doesn't impact my everyday life. I continue to do my normal activities and I've adapted to the limitations of my disability. Because it's part of who I am, it's something that's worthy of talking about. Lockhart is a great example of how to stay striving to be self-accepting. She admits that she has had periods where she felt uncomfortable in wearing certain clothing styles which showed her arms. She wears what she likes and posts photos of herself dressed in outfits she chooses on social media. The key to self-love for her is that it's not an end place to go. However, that is typical for people with doubts. People you associate yourself with that truly understand your personal story and who can look inside your soul are the best people to remind you of what you're worrying about.
